Because You’re Mine EP Out Today

Last year, Emily challenged me to write a song for our son. As we eagerly awaited his arrival, I began to think and pray about fatherhood. Feeling very under-qualified for this position, this project gave me the opportunity to explore God’s own love for me as my Father in heaven and reflect upon how my earthly father loved me so well. All of this added together to mark the beginning of this project where anticipating fatherhood illuminated some new insights into the Gospel. Although I had not yet met my son, Nathan, I loved him to death. For no other […]

The “group” prayer

Posted on 1 CommentPosted in Faith, Life

We’ve all been there. The sweat drips from your brow, the knot forms in your stomach, and your hands become increasingly clammy. It’s only a matter of moments when your number will be called and your time has come. Will you be ready? If you grew up in church, the pressure of the “group” prayer has probably weighed on you at some point. Your youth minister or Bible study leader has said those dreaded words, “Let’s go around the group and just pray as you feel led.” “Pray as I feel led? I feel led to just sit here and […]

Keep the X in Xmas!

Posted on Leave a commentPosted in Faith, Life

This may sound a little weird to some of you, but I want to keep the “X” in “Xmas”. I realize that upon first read some of you may not like the title of this post, but I think if you take a second to read it, you may agree. I say that because when I say “X” out loud, I’m not saying the letter “ecks” but I’m saying “Christ”. Don’t believe me? Let me explain… Now I’m not a Greek expert, but I have friends who are, and they had the joy of showing me the historical truth behind […]

Rocking chairs…

… are the greatest. When’s the last time you took a few minutes just to sit? I mean truly escape the busyness of your daily schedule and the distractions of this world to take some time to rest, relax, and be still. Do you remember? What was it like? We’ve all had those weeks from time to time where it’s hard to see the light at the end of the tunnel and all you can think to do is get through the next thing on your agenda one at a time. Well last week was mine. About half way through […]

That’s what she said? Really?

Posted on Leave a commentPosted in Faith, Life

We’ve all heard it. Lurking just around the corner ready to attack at any moment, though it seems like it comes out of nowhere. An innocent conversation is suddenly hijacked by the selfish desire of comical praise sending the minds of those around them to dark places. I have a sense of humor. I can take a joke. Seriously. I even like to offer up my own cheap wit from time to time. But “that’s what she said”? Really? Sometimes the fact that “it’s a joke” still doesn’t make it okay. I expect to hear this phrase from some people, […]

Sabbatizing! (what’s that?!)

Posted on Leave a commentPosted in Faith, Life

In my last blog post we started exploring what it meant to truly rest and the importance of taking a weekly Sabbath. We looked at some supporting Scripture, I referenced a sermon from my RUF campus pastor, and then threw in my two cents. Now I want to take a look at how we can actively observe the Sabbath. “Rest and think about God” – A child like faith can be very encouraging sometimes! I find it interesting that the Commandment about the Sabbath is one of the two that are written as a “thou shalt” instead of a “thou shalt […]
